1 KATHLEEN S. BARTELS Director's Foreword Kathleen S. Bartels Janet Cardiff and George Bures Miller are among the world's best-known artists working with new media and technologies. Their interest in producing a compelling environment for interactive experiences has gained them a strong international community of participants and viewers for their many projects. We are delighted to collaborate with the Art Gallery of Ontario to produce this important exhibition and publication. The exhibition's title, Lost in the Memory Palace: Janet Cardiff and George Bures Miller, evokes a labyrinthine space where memory is both lost and retrieved. We are invited to wander from room to room, searching through shards of memory, as if trying to reassemble a lost train of thought. The room is a constant trope in their art. It offers shelter from a stormy world. It is a place to withdraw and to convalesce. It is a site of mystery and danger, and in some instances, of death. Representing 20 years of outstanding collaborative work, Lost in the Memory Palace celebrates the unique partnership of two remarkable artists. With five major installations and related works, this exhibition offers a focused theme within the structure a comprehensive overview. Seen in this way we are witness to the evolution of a distinct formal language and a provocatively intimate voice. The work of Cardiff and Miller, both individually
